Alpe d’Huez ski resort

If you wish to ski the longest black run in Europe head to Alpe d’Huez and the 16kms, ‘La Sarenne’.  You’ll have to be an advanced skier to start the run and also to finish it as there are no exit routes on the way down!  Should your intentions be a little less ambitious the 39 green runs of Alpe d’Huez should meet your needs.

Alpe d’Huez is one of the top five alpine resorts in France and an ideal resort for skiers and snowboarders of every level.  Set against the back drop of the impressive scenery of the Grandes Rousses Mountains, it boasts an excellent snow record and weather conditions. For beginners this is an ideal resort with the wide gentle lower slopes providing 39 confidence boosting green runs.  The local ski schools have an unrivalled reputation in giving novices the best possible start.

For snow-boarders there are usually bubble or chair lifts available and a good snow park has been built in the main bowl which attracts some high level competitions throughout the season.

Activities for non-skiers or just for a change!

In resort there is an Olympic Size Ice Rink, indoor and outdoor swimming (heated, of course!) and a fully equipped sports centre with tennis, aerobics, squash courts, table tennis, gymnasium and a fantastic climbing wall.  For some great outdoor fun how about sending the kids down the toboggan run!  For something a little more unusual try the Ice Driving school or Quad Biking, offering biking on challenging snow circuits, guided quad bike tours of the resort, ice-karting or ice-driving initiation and sliding training.  Or for the incredibly brave how about climbing ice waterfalls!

Flying high!

Paragliding courses for beginners, tandem jumps and advanced courses all available.  For a unique view of the Grandes Rousses Mountains take a helicopter trip and go home with a very special video and some stunning holiday photos.

Staying in Bourg d’Oisans

For those looking for a more peaceful end to the day, or a more authentic French experience staying in Bourg d’Oisans offers a perfect solution for your ski holiday.  You’ll be sharing the bars and restaurants with the French locals as well as other tourists ‘in the know’.  Expect a little less English speaking, a lot more value for money and a much quieter night.

Both houses offer a very spacious and relaxing environment.  Ideal for family groups who need quality time to wind down or time for the children to rest and recuperate, as well as for groups that simply don’t want the cramped conditions often associated with staying in a ski resort.

There is ample free parking by ‘The Granary House’ and ‘The Stable House’ and because it’s centrally located it benefits from snow clearing by the local snow ploughs.  The route to Alpe d’Huez is 14km and takes about 20 minutes, travelling up the road made famous by the Tour de France.  There is  plenty of centrally located free parking in Alpe d’Huez when you arrive.  If some of your party are ready to come home early or you want to head up the mountain after them there is a regular bus service between Bourg d’Oisans and Alpe d’Huez.
